Why I Built Mantou

Why I Built Mantou

Mantou began as a childhood nickname.

My mother’s side of the family gave it to me because I was a big, round boy, and a mantou is a soft, round Chinese steamed bun. At the time, it was simply something my family called me.

I never imagined it would become the name of a clothing brand.

As I got older, I realized the name carried more than a childhood joke. It carried family gatherings, dim sum, meals around a Lazy Susan, laughter, complicated relationships and the feeling of belonging to something larger than myself.

It carried where I began.

I Was Built by People

For much of my life, I thought I had to be the person everyone else could rely on.

I wanted to solve problems, lighten the mood and make sure everything would be okay. People have told me they depend on me, but the truth is that I depend on them just as much.

My father taught me that love can look like effort.

My friends taught me loyalty.

My wife taught me that some choices are not about what is easiest, but about recognizing what matters most.

My children continue to shape my sense of purpose.

Each person left something with me.

Each one became part of what built me.

Why Clothing?

I did not want to put a logo on a shirt and call it a brand.

Clothing is personal. What we wear can represent where we come from, what we believe and how we want to move through the world.

That makes it a powerful way to begin a conversation.

Someone may first discover Mantou because they like the boy icon, the bun emblem or the feel of the shirt.

But my hope is that they stay because something in the story feels familiar.

Maybe it reminds them of a parent who tried their best.

A friend who never left.

A difficult choice.

A second chance.

The shirt is something you wear. The story is something you carry.

Stories Are the Foundation

As Mantou developed, I realized the stories could not simply be added around the clothing.

They had to be the foundation of the brand.

Mantou is not only about my life. My story is simply where it begins.

The bigger purpose is to create a place where people can share the relationships, experiences and choices that helped shape them.

A story does not need to be dramatic.

It only needs to be honest.

What Built You?

That is the question at the centre of Mantou.

Was it your family?

A lifelong friend?

Your culture?

A mistake?

A sacrifice someone made for you?

A moment when you chose a different direction?

We are all carrying things that cannot be seen from the outside.

Mantou exists to make space for those stories.

I built Mantou because I believe what shapes us deserves to be remembered.

And because sharing where we began may help someone else understand where they are going.

Built in Layers.

What built you?
